The average American consumes more than 25 teaspoons of sugar on a daily basis. This much sugar has been linked to increased incidence of obesity, inflammation and heart disease among other things. In contrast, our ancestors thrived on a healthy diet high in protein, fat, and plant foods and other than from natural sources there was virtually no sugar in their diets. Back then, the sugar consumed was approximately 22 teaspoons per year!
Sugar causes excess-acidity
Sugar throws off the acid-alkaline balance in the body and thus creates an environment that is out of balance. Poor digestive health, sore achy joints, brain fog, and low energy are just a few of the symptoms caused by too much acidity.
According to Dr.Andrew Weil, an expert on inflammation, “research has linked added sugar to the development of high blood pressure, increased triglycerides, low HDL (“good”) cholesterol, and fatty liver problems. It also makes insulin less effective in lowering blood sugar.”
Since we humans were never designed to consume this much sugar, when a greater percentage of our calories comes from sugar, which contains no nutritional value at all, we end up setting ourselves up for a health tsunami.
In order to balance your body, reduce soreness and stiffness in your joints, improve your digestion, your mood, and enhance your immune system’s ability to protect you, the best thing you can do is take a hint from our ancestors and stop eating so much sugar. Your body and brain will thank you.
