It’s so important to feed and nourish our souls to have a healthy mind, body and spirit. When you speak of health and wellness, it should be about your diet, as well as your mindset and perception of who you are and how you feel about You.
When I think of nourishing my soul, I think of things that make me feel grounded, centered and calm while at the same time energized and focused.
Acknowledging that I am a work in progress, here are some ways I like to feed my soul:
- Daily detox practices such as:
- Oil Pulling, an ancient Ayurvedic technique to improve oral and full-body health by “swishing” coconut oil in the mouth for 10-20 minutes.
- Tongue scraping, another Ayurvedic recommendation has many benefits far as oral, physical, mental, and spiritual health. The thought behind this practice is that since the oral cavity is one of the main gateways between your mind/body and the environment, general well-being is dependent upon maintaining this connection.
- Drinking warm lemon water with a dash of cayenne pepper and some ACV to give my liver and digestive system the ultimate healthy treatment, with a kick!
- Dry skin brushing to support and stimulate the lymphatic system, exfoliate the skin and help reduce cellulite.
- Practicing yoga and meditation to quiet the noises in my head and help ground and center me while I learn to honor who I am.
- Exercising, especially cardio, is when I can unplug from technology and recharge my battery all while working up a sweat and kicking my own butt.
- Eating a mostly plant-based diet and eliminating added sugar and most processed foods has helped me keep healthier than before. I rarely feel stuffed, bloated and uncomfortable, and I get the nourishment I need from foods I love.
- Laughing out loud is so good for us. It shouldn’t be surprising to learn that a good belly laugh is a great way to lower stress, release endorphins and promote an overall feel good feeling.
- Trying to get at least 7 hours of sleep each night allows my muscles to repair themselves and my brain to quiet down. Studies have shown that 7 or 8 hours of sleep can be attributed to sharpened attention, improved memory and decreased stress.
It is interesting, though should not be surprising, to point out that all of these techniques are also part of a weight loss and anti-inflammatory program.
