Halloween, the neighborhood kids and dentists favorite time of year. Do you dread it the way I used to every year? I even went so far as to buy treats that I don’t like just so I wasn’t tempted – talk about a sugar addiction!

Now that my kids have grown up Halloween for them is more about the costumes and parties than the candy but there are still the little kids in the neighborhood who plan very hard the right route to get the best treats and I have to have something ready for the few that make it to our house.

Just in case you do feel the need to share the treats with your trick or treater, or worse, to eat what is left in your bowl, I have some hints to help keep you mindful:

  • Buy some non-food items for the kiddies like activity pads, pencils or rubber bracelets in support of a charity.
  • Buy individual packages of pretzels or animal crackers to give out as an option to candy for the kids.
  • You can offer little water bottles. If you buy them in bulk from a big box retailer they won’t be that costly. The trick or treaters will probably be thirsty.
  • Have some treats handy for the dogs that come with their families.
  • When all else fails, and to avoid being a “party pooper” you can try to include some healthier versions of the sweet stuff. Dark chocolate is healthier than the milk chocolate and fruit leathers (not fruit roll-ups) are also a healthy treat.
  • Pick some treats that you don’t like so you’re not tempted to “pick” before, during and after the holiday is over.
  • Let your kids pick out their favorite treats and then donate the rest!

Halloween is the beginning of the holiday season, where there is some kind of food associated with every special occasion. I am excited to be launching  an Autumn Detox Program which is a perfect way to eliminate food, toxins and unwanted waste that has entered the body through eating, breathing and touching. In order to have a healthy body you need to have a clean and healthy liver, and lymphatic and digestive systems (your gut).

Maybe you are getting ready for vacation where you will be wearing your bathing suit for the first time since summer. Perhaps you have a special holiday party or event coming up. Maybe you just feel lousy lately and don’t really know why. All of these are perfect reasons to give your body the gift of a detox.
