End of Summer Blues?…

by | Aug 31, 2018

Did you ever notice how even with the best intentions at the beginning of June, summer can derail our healthy goals with the endless BBQ’s and vacation food. While summer is about to come to an end, it is a good time to think about the exciting possibilities that you can embrace at the beginning of autumn.

What I love most about September in my area is that the weather is often still gorgeous and warm and gives us an easier transition into the cooler weather. Even though my schedule gets tighter and commitments seem to pile on, the fact that I can still walk around in light clothing and without a jacket makes me feel better.

Some people really embrace the fall weather and the food and fashion that come with it.  Some even embrace the routine that comes with another school year and more flexibility when their kids are gone for the day. Others, however, may feel more depressed or disappointed that summer flew by so quickly and find themselves filled with regrets and “if onlies”.

Some suggestions for avoiding the end-of-summer blues include:

  • Take advantage of the month of September and if you’re lucky enough to have an “Indian Summer” you can spend some time at the beach while the weather is still beautiful and the crowds are gone.
  • Revisit goals you may have set for the summer. If you haven’t completed a project set some new goals for yourself and maybe even assign a deadline to complete them. I love being able to check things off my To-Do list.  Don’t make your goals too unrealistic, maybe just a couple of items such as a closet clean out, finishing a book or… eliminating sugar from your diet will make you feel so much better.
  • Change up your exercise routine and explore the outdoors more. The cooler weather may make it more enjoyable to take your dog for a long walk or to go for a hike with a friend. If you’re lucky enough to live in an area with the beautiful fall foliage you can really embrace nature by being outdoors.
  • Visit your local Farmer’s Markets. The end of summer may be the end of some seasonal fruits and veggies but it is also time for the bountiful and beautiful variety of an autumn harvest. From apples to squashes and other favorites you can really enjoy what this season has to offer.
  • Consider adding Meatless Monday to your family’s meals beginning this fall. The concept of Meatless Monday is hardly new but because as a society we consume so much more meat than ever before, and we are heavier than ever before you may want to consider getting some more of your protein from plant sources. Besides providing your body with added nutrients like fiber and iron, consuming plant-based proteins helps to reduce the amount of saturated fat in your body, and it is also great for the environment.

Until school starts, even if the calendar changes from August to September, enjoy the last bits of the vacation season and make some plans for next year. Hopefully setting and sticking to some simple goals like drinking more water, exercising more or eliminating junk foods and soda will result in positive results for you and your family.

Yours In Good Health,
